Study Permit and Student Visa
The study permit is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows international students to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. Most foreign nationals need a study permit to study in Canada. A study permit is usually valid for the length of your study program, plus an extra 90 days to prepare to leave Canada or apply to extend your stay. As an international student, you need to apply for study permit with all supporting documents before you travel to Canada. Please note the Study permit is not a visa and it doesn’t let you enter Canada. You may also need a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA) to enter in Canada. Once IRCC approves your study permit, IRCC will issue visitor visa with your study permit.
Work in Canada While Studying
As an international student you may be eligible to work in Canada while studying, you can only start working in Canada when you start your study program. As a study permit holder, you may be able to work on-campus or off-campus up to 20 hours per week while studying. Student can work full time i.e, up to 40 hours during summer vacation. You will need to get a work permit if your study program includes a required co-op or internship placement. You may also be able to apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) to continue working in Canada after completion of your study.
Post Graduate Work Permit Program (PGWP)
International students who have completed their program graduated from eligible Canadian designated learning institutions (DLIs) are eligible to get the permit to work in Canada. A post-graduation work permit may be issued based on the length of the study program for a minimum of 8 months up to a maximum of 3 years depending on the length of the study permit completed.
